Irish Genealogy Newsletter - Maiden Names

Hi folks. March - what a great month! St. Patrick’s Day. March Madness. My birthday (sadly not on St. Patty’s). I recently became aware that March is also National Women’s History Month. Their website (http://www.nwhp.org/) has info and resources related to that project. No genealogical info there, but plenty of other material.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that most of our female ancestors did not leave much of a paper trail. Maiden names can be especially tough to track down. Here’s a list of sources that might be helpful. The first one is an US-only source, while the others are relevant to both US and Irish records.

• Social Security: SS-5 application forms (d1936-current) Details in my Course I handout.
• Death certificate for subject, subject’s siblings, subject’s children (civil & ~church funeral).
• Marriage certificate for subject, subject’s siblings, subject’s children (civil & church).
• Birth certificate for subject, subject’s siblings, subject’s children (civil & church baptism).
• Other possibilities include wills/probate, newspapers, pension records.

Take Care,
Dennis
